UNFAIR AND EXORBITANT ADDITIONAL FEES

Updated: Jul 16, 2021

Advocating for the families of those currently incarcerated

It is because of this, that we have been in receipt of communications from residents of the State of Virginia, asking for us to assist in drawing attention to the unfair issue of exorbitant additional fees, which are incurred by the families of those currently incarcerated in the Virginia Correctional System each time they deposit funds through the contracted vendor JPay and into their loved one’s commissary accounts.

We have sent correspondence to the following persons regarding this concern:

THE HONORABLE

SENATOR MAMIE E. LOCKE, DISTRICT 2

SENATOR R. CREIGH DEEDS, DISTRICT 25

SENATOR L. LOUISE LUCAS, DISTRICT 18

SENATOR JENNIFER B. BOYSKO, DISTRICT 33

SENATOR JOHN S. EDWARDS, DISTRICT 21

SENATOR BARBARA A. FAVOLA, DISTRICT 31

SENATOR SCOTT A. SUROVELL, DISTRICT 36

There is a large demographic of people in Virginia, who as you are well aware, are living far below the poverty line; and are struggling to afford quality of life for themselves and their loved ones. Many families due to financial difficulties are unable to afford to send a larger single monthly transfer of funds to those serving time, and as such have no other option but to make smaller payments weekly, biweekly or more frequently upon availability of said funds.

We are seeking relief for loved ones who have to pay additional fees just to provide for their friends and family members currently incarcerated within the State of Virginia.

We have are fighting for consideration of the costs associated for families with incarcerated loved ones, the citizens and tax payers, with that of the large profit margin of a contracted vendor like JPay who makes a considerable sum of money through the required purchase of stamps, etc. just for loved ones to be able to remain in communication with their sons, daughters, brothers, mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, etc.

We will not stop advocating for those both inside and outside the walls.

In Solidarity,

P. MacManus, Advocate VA Team Member
